How to Refill a Stratasys uPrint (SE | Plus) EEPROM

re:Filament for uPrint reads a cartridge’s data through your printer: the openfilament Cable connects your computer to the DIAG port on the back of the uPrint, so the cartridge stays in its bay. This guide walks through a complete refill, one step at a time.

It works with uPrint / uPrint Plus and uPrint SE / uPrint SE Plus printers.

Note: Using a classic Fortus or Dimension? Follow the Fortus and Dimension EEPROM refill guide instead.

What you’ll need

  • The OpenFilament uPrint cable, plugged into the DIAG port on the back of the printer and into a USB port on your computer
  • Your uPrint, switched on, with the cartridge loaded in its material bay
  • A Windows 10 or 11 PC with the Prolific (PL2303) USB-serial driver installed
  • reFilament-uPrint.exe. It’s a single file: no installer and no .NET download needed

Tip: The first time you open reFilament-uPrint.exe, Windows may show “Windows protected your PC”. Click More info, then Run anyway.

A quick tour of the window

The re:Filament for uPrint window before a cartridge is read.
  • A. Connection: choose the cable, the material bay and your printer model, then read the cartridge.
  • B. Quick actions: one-click changes such as refilling the material counter.
  • C. Cartridge data: a summary card plus every field, with the value to write next to the value currently on the chip.
  • D. Mode switch: Basic mode (default) or Advanced mode.
  • E. Write to cartridge: sends your changes to the cartridge through the printer.
  • F. Status bar: tells you what just happened, or what went wrong and how to fix it.

Step 1: Connect the cable and choose it

With the printer on, connect the openfilament Cable to the printer’s DIAG port and to your computer. In Cable, choose OpenFilament Cable (COM…).

Choose the openfilament Cable.

Tip: The list updates by itself every few seconds. If the cable doesn’t appear, unplug it, plug it back in and wait a moment. If it still doesn’t appear, reinstall the Prolific driver.

Step 2: Choose the material bay

In Material bay, choose the bay that holds the cartridge you want to refill: Bay 0 Model Material, Bay 0 Support Material, Bay 1 Model Material or Bay 1 Support Material.

Pick the bay with the cartridge.

Step 3: Choose your printer model

In Printer type, choose uPrint / uPrint Plus or uPrint SE / uPrint SE Plus. The cartridge data is protected with a key that depends on the model, so the right choice matters.

Pick your uPrint model.

Step 4: Read the cartridge

Click Read cartridge. re:Filament asks the printer for the cartridge data, which takes about 5 seconds. When it’s done, the status bar shows EEPROM read OK and the data fills in.

Click Read cartridge.

Step 5: Check the cartridge data

After a read: the summary (A), the values you can change (B) and what’s on the chip now (C).
  • A. Summary: the material, how much is left (shown as a bar and in cm³), and the chip’s ID.
  • B. New value: what will be written to the cartridge. Edit these.
  • C. On chip: what’s on the cartridge right now. This column is read-only.

Quantities are in cm³. Fields with a small padlock can only be changed in Advanced mode (see Step 9).

Step 6: Check the refill

re:Filament for uPrint sets the new Current qty to the cartridge’s full (initial) quantity as soon as you read it. That’s why it has an orange dot and the bottom bar shows Unsaved changes. If you’ve changed it, click Refill remaining material to set it back to full.

The cartridge is ready to be refilled. Nothing is written yet.

Note: Nothing changes on the cartridge until you click Write to cartridge in Step 8.

Step 7: New serial number and dates

  • Generate new serial: creates a random 8-digit serial number.
  • Update dates to now (optional): sets the manufacturing date and last-use date to the current date and time.
Each changed field gets an orange dot.

Step 8: Write to the cartridge

Click Write to cartridge. Leave the cable connected and the cartridge in its bay until the status bar turns green.

Send your changes to the cartridge.

When the write succeeds, the status bar says EEPROM written successfully — remove and reinsert the cartridge, and each field that was written gets a green check.

Green checks show what was written.

Important: Remove the cartridge from the bay and insert it again so the printer reads the new values.

Step 9 (optional): Advanced mode

By default the app is in Basic mode: you can change the serial number and current quantity. Advanced mode also unlocks the material, lot number, manufacturing and last-use dates, and initial quantity.

Use the switch to turn Advanced mode on.

Turning it on shows a warning first. Changing these fields can corrupt the cartridge’s data so the printer can’t read it. Click Cancel unless you know the correct values.

Advanced mode asks for confirmation.

Step 10: Refill another cartridge

Click Clear all values to empty the form. To refill the cartridge in another bay, choose that bay and go back to Step 4.

Clear the form before the next cartridge.
